This class has the following activities that will happen either in the trip to NYC (Feb 20-23) or through alternate assignments.

MoMa Exhibitions

On Friday, Feb. 21 we will visit the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and while we will explore the whole museum, we will pay special attention to the following exhibits and archives: On Week 7, our online class will be focused on a discussion on the relation between art and poetry focused on the MoMA exhibits and Frank O'Hara Papers.

Visual Language

While in NYC, Boone (or wherever you live or go) take photos of any visually interesting uses of language, whether it's on billboards, buildings, products, paintings, signs, graffiti, or any other form in the physical world. This includes our trip to (or website exploration of) the New York Public Library and Printed Matter in NYC and this exhibit. On Week 12, you will share and analyze some of this work in an assignment on Concrete Poetry.

Poetry in Performance

The NYC trip will feature two performances that will prompt you to think about how poetry and the poetic function of language is shaped by live performance for poetic or comedic effects.
